Artificially intelligent solutions continue to expand their reach in various sectors, including mental wellbeing. Meeno, a fresh startup by Renate Nyborg, the former CEO of Tinder, is stepping into the spotlight. Aiming to mitigate loneliness via an AI-powered chatbot, the company raised the curtain on its $3.9 million seed round funding led by Sequoia. A rollout of the app on the App Store is scheduled for December, targeting countries including the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands.
Noteworthy contributors to the seed round encompass Andrew Ng’s AI Fund and NEA, increasing the total funds raised by the previously named Amorai to $5 million. This figure accompanies a pre-seed round held in April, courtesy of reputable angel investors such as Megan Jones Bell, Jim Lanzone, Eileen Burbidge, and others with significant roles in colossal businesses like Google and Yahoo.
Scrutinizing its positioning, Meeno distances itself from counterparts like Replika and Blush, marketing its innovative solution as a “personal mentor.” The startup clearly articulates its vision as being more than just a virtual "girlfriend, boyfriend, clinical therapist, or coach." With its learning model, Meeno constantly improves its relationship advice delivery, relying on the user's app interactions. The provision of factors like age, ethnicity, and sexual orientation during app set-up also helps the chatbot to circumvent biased conversations.
The genesis of Meeno traces back to Nyborg's tenure at Tinder, where she discovered the prevalence of loneliness among young users, particularly among the Gen Z demographic. Nyborg herself highlighted that it was, in fact, Andrew Ng who suggested large language models (LLMs) as a potential tech solution to challenge loneliness. Owing to the iPhone's popularity among teens and Apple's privacy tools, Meeno is concentrating on an iOS-first launch.
With AI chatbots being a literal game-changer in the tech industry, Meeno is expected to receive substantial attention. Special precautions, influenced by the cautionary tale of Snap's emergency to roll out AI safety tools, are being put in to ensure Meeno maintains its value proposition without compromising users' experience. Early supporters have a delight in store with 12 months of premium Meeno service for users who register before January 31, 2024.
